Nestled in the bustling heart of New York City at 265 W 37th St, El Sabroso offers an authentic taste of Ecuadorian and Latin American cuisine that stands out in a neighborhood filled with diverse dining options. This cozy, no-frills restaurant embraces its "hole-in-the-wall" charm, situated in what feels more like a freight corridor, yet it’s precisely this unpretentious atmosphere that lets the star of the show—its vibrant dishes—take center stage.
El Sabroso’s menu reads like a love letter to traditional Latin American comfort food. Signature plates such as Pernil Roasted Pork and Carne Guisada Beef Stew evoke rich, hearty flavors that are both deeply satisfying and soul-warming. The Carne Guisada delivers tender, slow-cooked beef drenched in a savory stew that makes each bite a stew of spices and subtle earthiness. Meanwhile, the Pollo Guisado Chicken Stew is a revelation—succulent chicken enveloped in a fragrant sauce that captures the essence of home-style cooking.
One guest praised the pernil, describing it as "tasty and moist," with perfectly fluffy rice and carefully prepared beans that balance the meal beautifully. Food lovers will appreciate the punchy, fiery kick of El Sabroso’s complementary hot sauce, but a word of caution—it's not for the faint of heart.
Beyond stews, the diverse menu features Chuletas Al Horno (Baked Pork Chops), Costillas Al Horno (Baked Beef Ribs), and delightful starters like Empanada De Carne. For something unique, try the Guatita Cao Cao Pansita, a traditional Ecuadorian tripe dish that intrigues adventurous palates. Sweet-toothed visitors will appreciate unexpected treats like the croissant French toast—comfort food with a Latin twist.
Despite the limited seating—El Sabroso feels more like a smart spot for takeout—guests consistently applaud the passionate and efficient service, which adds warmth to an otherwise industrial setting. The restaurant’s dedication shines through every plate, capturing both the nostalgia of Ecuadorian flavors and a commitment to quality that leaves a lasting impression.
While some have noted that a portion of the menu may occasionally be unavailable and prices lean toward the higher side for takeout-focused eateries, the overall value lies in the authentic taste and honest craftsmanship of each dish. Whether you’re craving a robust beef stew or tender baked pork chops, El Sabroso delivers a genuine Latin American culinary experience that promises to satisfy your craving for bold, comforting flavors in the heart of New York City.
The pernil was tasty and moist but a little less salty than I usually prefer. I love when pork packs a punch but I can’t expect every restaurant to have the exact same recipe. The beans were great and the rice was incredibly fluffy. If you can’t handle heat stay away from their complementary hot sauce available at the tables. Food was reasonably priced especially for the neighborhood however, I guess somewhat predictably, the portion sizes were on the small side. If you bring your appetite you just might need to get second lunch.
The dishes here show culinary expertise! Every dish represents their commitment to quality. The workers handle tasks efficiently and politely. The restaurant maintains steady performance. My next meal will feature different selections.
What a great little place! El Sabroso is situated in a freight entrance, which is literally a corridor for incoming and outgoing freight. We couldn't decide on which food we wanted because the selection was all great! In the end we had chicken and beef stew, both fabulous! Service great too!
Food was delicious and authentic. Unfortunately half of the menu was unavailable, which was disappointing. This is mainly a "to-go" place as there are only 2 tables. It's a literal hole- in- the- wall- place like a loading dock or something. Still enjoyed the food, but the place itself, and the loss of menu items could be overlooked if it weren't for their prices. It was almost $40.00 for two of us for just one portion of beef stew with lentils and white rice each.
